Is indoor air worse than outdoor air?

It has been suggested that indoor pollution is perhaps even 3.5 times higher than outside pollution, which suggests just shutting our doors won't help.

So what are the most common contributors to indoor pollution?

  • Indoor environment - inadequate temperature, humidity, poor air circulation, ventilation systems issues.
  • Indoor air contaminants - chemicals, dust, mould or fungi, bacteria, vapours, odours, cigarette smoke.
  • Insufficient outdoor air intake.

Some of the symptoms linked to poor indoor air quality include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Hypersensitivity and allergies
  • Sinus congestion
  • Coughing and sneezing
  • Sinus congestion
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness

So how do you rid your business premises of indoor air pollution?

At the top of the list is obviously do not smoke indoors.  New Zealand's Smoke-free Environments Act 1990 requires indoor workplaces to be smoke-free.

Keep it Clean!

Wipe down surfaces regular

Dust all services on a regular basis

Vacuum carpets frequently using a cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter 

Have your rubbish removed on a frequent basis

Have your heat pump serviced regularly

Invest in an air purifier.

Ensure your company restrooms are cleaned regularly, paying particular attention to any sources of mould
